White days

The recent cold snap and snow falls were a welcome relief from the winter rains.

King tides return to Howe Sound

The seasons of rain has blown in from the Pacific. It will be mostly wet from now on until – well, last year, it was until June.

King tides in the Squamish Estuary swamp the low ground.

At this time, the king tides are in full flood. These happen a couple of times a year and mark the absolute highest tides of the year. Consequently, places that are normally high and dry, even at a normal high tide, are now swamped. Old stumps that would be perched in meadows of sedge are now the only refuge for plants growing on these old ‘nursery logs’ that keep the plant roots out of the salt water.

Lest anyone take it seriously, this photo was a six second exposure at f22 on a 20mm lens. A passing truck graciously and unwittingly provided the light trails.
